Assistance

DEFINITION

A person with reduced mobility is understood to mean any person whose mobility is reduced due to physical disability, locomotory or sensory, an intellectual impairment, age, illness or any other cause of disability and who needs special attention, accomodation or assistance over and above what is provided to other passengers.

Disability does not equate with illness, and a separate programme to sick customers exists. 

Note: A passenger who is both blind and deaf is classified as a person with reduced mobility (PRM).

PASSENGER WITH REDUCED MOBILITY (PRM) - GENERAL

A passenger with reduced mobility, PRM, has the same rights as other citizens to freedom of movement and freedom of choice; this applies to air travel as to all other areas.

Note: It is not permitted to ask the passenger about the disability/diagnosis.

ATTENDANT/ABLE BODIED PERSON/ESCORT

Blind/deaf passengers

A blind and deaf person is classified as an incapacitated passenger and must be accompanied by bearer.

Blind/deaf passengers may not be seated at emergency exit rows.

When a PRM passenger is travelling with escort, it is recommended to book both passengers in the same PNR. If two separate PNR:s, make a cross reference in PNR with the note TTW (Travel Together With) Last name/First name and PNR number.

Note: Passenger and attendant/able bodied person/escort must be booked in the same cabin and seated together during the flight.

SEATING

For safety reasons there are seating restrictions at emergency areas.

Note: Always request special service before making a seat request.

WHEELCHAIR - GENERAL INFO

It is recommended to make the reservation for type of assistance, not later than 48 hours before departure, to ensure the best assistance for passenger. If reservation is made less than 48 hours before departure, the guaranteed waiting time for assistance might be longer. 

Maximum allowed weight per single piece of checked baggage on CRJ900 is 81 kg.

Always check what kind of help the passenger needs, e.g. WCHR, before requesting type of wheelchair in the PNR, e.g. WCBD, and that the maximum dimension is not exceeded.

Passengers may bring their own electrical wheelchair or manual wheelchair on their journey, without extra charge. Passenger may also bring an additional manual wheelchair without extra charge.

Maximum dimensions must be checked BEFORE entering SSR request.

Confirmation of the wheelchair depends on a quota.

 

GROUPS

Group reservation holding not confirmed SR requests for wheelchairs, are asked to contact Space Control (space@nordica.ee)   for assistance. Detailed information must be given regarding number, type, e.g. foldable, and measurements.

TYPE OF ASSISTANCE AND WHEELCHAIR

Codes

When requesting assistance for a passenger needing a wheelchair, one of the following shall be used:

WCHC - carry

Passenger is completely immobile, he can move only with the help of a wheelchair or any

other means and requires assistance at all times from arrival at the airport to seating in the

Aircraft.

WCHS   - steps

Passenger cannot walk up or down stairs, but can move about in an aircraft cabin and

requires a wheelchair to move between the aircraft and terminal, in the terminal and

between arrival and departure points on the city side of the terminal.

WCHR - ramp

Passenger can walk up and down stairs and move about in an aircraft cabin, but requires

a wheelchair or other means for movements between the aircraft and terminal, in the

terminal and between arrival and departure points on the city side of the terminal.

Note: If the passenger is in possession of a private wheelchair, it shall be outlined as follows: WCHR OWN, WCHS  OWN or WCHC OWN.

 

Always check what kind of help the passenger needs and request type of assistance, e.g. WCHR. If passenger brings own wheelchair also request type of wheelchair, e.g. WCBD.

Kind of help

WCHR Ramp

Passenger can ascend/descend steps and make own way i.e. to/from cabin seat, across ramp, fingerdock or to/from mobile lounge, as applicable. Passenger requiring wheelchair for distance to/from gate.

WCHS Steps

Passenger cannot ascend/descend steps, but is able to move to/from cabin seat. Requires wheelchair for distance to/from aircraft and must be carried up/down the steps.

WCHC Carry

Passenger completely immobile. Requires wheelchair to/from aircraft and must be carried to/from cabin seat.
Following limitations is necessary due to security reasons:

  • MAX dimensions are 180 x 85 x 65 cm 81kg
  • Evaluation limit of weight 81KG. Affected airports and their ground handling must be prepared and staffed.

If the passenger is covered by point 2) you have to insert the following SSR in the PNR:

SR OTHS ND - WCHC 81 KG NOT OVER 43CM.

NOTE! Always see the notice on the right coloumn to see if passenger need accompanied person!

 

How to book own wheelchair in Amadeus

Type of wheelchair 

WCBD - Dry cell batteries Accepted on all aircrafts

Additional wheelchair

Foldable WCMP - not powered by electricity
Accepted on all aircrafts
Foldable means that the seat can be folded together side to side (not only seat back folded down.)
WCMP that only have removable wheels is NOT considered to be foldable.

Note: SR request must not be made for foldable manual wheelchairs. Will be sent as checked baggage without any fee.

Acceptance of the wheelchairs as passenger baggage:

Wheelchairs with dry-cell (non-spillable) batteries are accepted as passenger baggage. Restrictions apply for  wheelchairs with wet-cell (spillable) and lithium batteries.

Electrical wheelchair:  it must be verified that battery is securely attached to the wheelchair or other battery powered mobility aid, battery terminals are protected for short circuit (e.g. by being enclosed within a battery container) and electrical  circuits have been isolated.

Where the mobility aid is specifically designed to have the battery removed (e.g. collapsible), the battery must be removed, the mobility aid may then be carried as checked baggage with-out restrictions.

Note: Removable Lithium batteries for wheelchairs not exceeding 300Wh may  be transported in checked baggage only.  Wheelchair and battery must be claimed and rechecked at each transfer point.  See maximum dimensions and maximum weight.

SERVICE ANIMALS

Rule

Service animals, on which the accompanying passengers are dependent, may be carried in cabin as unchecked baggage. The service animal is excluded from weight limitations and container/crate requirements. A restraint harness/leash must be brought by the passenger in order to secure and restrain the animal during the entire flight. Two (2) service animals are allowed on the same flight provided, total number of service animals and pets does not exceed 4 per flight.

Note: Same rules also apply when service animals under training are travelling with the trainer.

Authorization

Authorization to bring a service animal (SVAN/ESAN) in the cabin should be requested through reservation offices in advance. When service animal in cabin has been confirmed, it is shown in the passenger’s PNR.

Definition

  • Service animals are such as:
  • Seeing Eye dogs
  • Assisting and emotional support dog
  • Sniffer dogs belonging to the police or to the customs, trained to find explosives or narcotics or acting as mountain rescue dogs.

Maximum of 4 pets in the aircraft cabin are allowed per flight (including escort and service dogs);

excluded from charge.

Emotional Support Animal

Request for free of charge emotional support animal must be documented by letter that states the following:

  • The letter must not be more than one year old;
  • Passenger has mental health-related disability;
  • Presence of the animal is necessary to the passenger’s health or treatment;
  • Individual writing the letter is a licensed mental health professional and that the passenger is under his or her care.

Note: If the reservation desk is not able to validate the documentation, or if the advance notification is not given, the dog can be transported as PETC or AVIH, and the respective fees apply.

Only dogs can be accepted as an emotional support on board Nordica aircraft.

Definition

A mentally handicapped passenger is a disabled passenger with intellectual or developmental disability of a kind that can be feared to be of essential inconvenience to his or her surroundings.

Handling

Transportation of mentally handicapped passengers requires a written permission from a physician.

Mentally handicapped passengers must always be accompanied by a bearer and treated as mobile PRM.
